Palant es recordada, sobre todo, por otra cosa: el cine. Durante los años en que la ley de exhibición obligatoria convirtió a los cortometrajes en parte del ritual de ir al cine en el Perú, dirigió más de veinte documentales sobre artistas plásticos del país. Su cámara observó talleres, pinceles y esculturas en proceso. Pero mientras filmaba a otros artistas, pintaba. Óleos, miniaturas, acuarelas y retratos fueron creciendo en paralelo, casi en silencio.

Durante mucho tiempo esa producción quedó en segundo plano. “Durante toda su vida siguió pintando y es una faceta que casi no se conoce”, dice su hija, la cineasta Silvia Kantor-Palant, quien ha impulsado esta retrospectiva. El título de la muestra proviene de una de las últimas series que pintó: un conjunto de cuadros donde la artista reunió recuerdos personales, imágenes soñadas y símbolos que volvieron una y otra vez, como si insistieran.

Mirar “Paisajes, sueños y devociones” con calma —dice Kantor-Palant— es también una forma de seguir el rastro de su madre por el país. “A lo largo de su carrera cinematográfica, ella viajó a muchos lugares del Perú. Hacía retratos o tomaba fotos y luego eso se convertía en dibujos, en óleos, en acuarelas”, agrega.

En las obras reunidas en la exposición aparecen elementos que se repiten como un código visual propio. Los relojes, por ejemplo, evocan la presencia constante del tiempo. “Era un reloj antiguo que estaba en la casa de mi bisabuelo y se convirtió en un símbolo que ella repetía”, recuerda Kantor-Palant. Para la artista, el tiempo no solo marcaba el paso de las horas, sino también la persistencia de la memoria.

También están las cartas. En “La carta a mi madre” o “Mensaje sin tiempo”, escribir y esperar respuesta se vuelve un gesto cargado de nostalgia. “Era la forma de comunicarnos los de otras edades”, dice su hija. En algunos cuadros aparecen incluso palomas mensajeras o botellas lanzadas al mar: maneras antiguas —y tal vez inútiles— de enviar un mensaje.

Hay más. Caracolas que sugieren el sonido del mar y el paso circular del tiempo. Llaves que parecen prometer una respuesta que nunca llega. Tres figuras femeninas que evocan un mito antiguo sobre el nacimiento, la vida y la muerte. La pintura de Palant funciona así: un sistema de signos que no se explica del todo, pero insiste.

En medio de esos símbolos también aparece la familia. La imagen de su padre pintando, la figura femenina que evoca a su madre y a ella misma. Un objeto recuerda a su hermano mayor, quien le enseñó a pintar cuando era niña. Murió muy joven, pero dejó esa primera lección: la acuarela, difícil, frágil, obstinada.

Y están los rostros del país. Palant deja pistas de aquellos personajes que encontró durante sus viajes para filmar documentales. Figuras que permanecieron en su memoria mucho después del rodaje. El cine le permitió observarlas; la pintura, volver sobre ellas. Como si después de filmar todavía quedara algo por decir —o por pintar.
