“Mi promoción de la universidad fue extraordinaria. Tuve a Bryce Echenique como compañero de carpeta, era estudioso, pero sufría de timidez. Éramos patas. Él sabía que yo, un tipo pendenciero y sapo, podía curarle su timidez”, comentó Tulio Loza en una entrevista del 2016 que traemos al recuerdo por el reciente fallecimiento de Bryce.

“Era tan tímido que le costaba trabajo acercarse a las chicas. Una vez se templó de una limeñita coqueta que a diario pasaba por la universidad para irse a chambear y como no se atrevía a hablarle, me dijo que yo abordara a la chica y luego se la presentara. Se trataba de una joven común, tenía cierto parecido físico a Tula Rodríguez, coquetita, fachosa, con su vestidito de percal. Yo le decía: ‘Bryce, no friegues, es una doméstica al lado de tu enamorada’, pues tenía su noviecita de tercer año de media, creo, era hija de un español”, agregó el popular ‘Cholo de acero inoxidable’.

Continuó: “Como era mi amigo y para que no friegue tanto, hice lo que me pidió. Un día esperamos a la joven bien temprano, a las 8: 00 a.m., y la abordé. Le dije: ‘Perdóname, no intento cortejarte, solo te estoy trabajando porque un compañero que te ama, que se defeca por ti, y es el dueño de ese Peugeot convertible que ves ahí, me ha pedido que te hable. Le comenté que se trataba de un hombre con futuro extraordinario, de billetera gorda, y que si no le gustaba podía esquivarlo (risas)”.

Según Tulio Loza su estrategia funcionó. “La chica aceptó que le presente a Bryce Echenique, poco tiempo después se concretó el romance”, sostuvo.

El escritor de “Un mundo para Julius” y ganador de Premio Planeta 2002 por “El huerto de mi amada” siempre fue un estudiante brillante que hacía despliegue frecuentemente de sus grandes ideas y lucidez.

Bryce Echenique nació dentro de una prominente familia de banqueros. Sus padres fueron Francisco Bryce Arróspide y Elena Echenique Basombrío de Bryce y se educó en el seno de la oligarquía limeña (su bisabuelo, José Rufino Echenique, fue presidente del Perú en 1851). “Tenía mucha plata, su papá era socio de un banco, siempre andaba con la billetera gorda, y siempre iba a la universidad con terno y corbata”, señaló el comediante.

El carisma de Tulio Loza y su capacidad de socializarse eran admirados por Bryce. “El tipo me amaba y me admiraba. Un día me dijo: ‘Mi padre debió tener un amigo como tú para no ser tan imbécil y tan tímido. Yo he heredado la timidez de mi padre’. Bryce no quería mucho a su padre y no sé por qué. Cada vez que visitaba a su papá para sacarle plata me pedía que lo acompañe”, comentó.

“Cuando tomaba me buscaba en mi casa de Barrios Altos para que lo acompañe a ver a su novia, que lo esperaba molesta porque había tomado. Lo hacía para evitar que lo requinten”, contó.

Los años universitarios terminaron, Bryce Echenique se licenció en Derecho y obtuvo el título de Doctor en Letras en la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (1977). No ejerció y se dedicó a la literatura. Tulio Loza también terminó la carrera y se dedicó a la actuación.

“A veces me llama de algún lugar de España, pero cada vez que viene, nosotros, los de la universidad le hacemos alguna cosita”, detalló el humorista.
