Y es que Bryce Echenique mantuvo un vínculo muy estrecho con la UNMSM, iniciando sus estudios de Derecho en 1957, siendo en sus claustros su “primer contacto con la realidad social del país”, un choque cultural que marcaría su visión del mundo.

“Entré con una gran deformación escolar y hogareña, de la cual no me quejo tampoco, pero cuando ingresé a San Marcos, el contraste fue bárbaro. Yo no sé, pero tuve un poco de miedo al principio”, declaró el escritor en una de sus últimas entrevistas.

Bryce continuó su formación académica en la misma casa de estudios, obteniendo el grado de doctor en Letras en 1977. La universidad recordó que el autor “llevó la literatura peruana al mundo con una voz única”.

Apenas cuatro meses antes de su deceso, en noviembre pasado, la Facultad de Letras y Ciencias Humanas le rindió un homenaje durante las “Jornadas Internacionales Alfredo Bryce Echenique”.

El evento conmemoraba los 55 años de su obra cumbre, «Un mundo para Julius», y los 25 años de «No me esperen en abril», constituyendo una de las últimas apariciones públicas del narrador.

Los restos de Bryce Echenique, nacido en Lima en 1939, están siendo velados en la Casona de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, su alma mater, donde intelectuales, políticos y lectores se han reunido para darle el último adiós.
