Con 35 años de servicio en el INSN y 33 dedicados a la perfusión extracorpórea, la licenciada, natural de Chincha y con 65 años de edad, llegó a esta especialidad guiada por la curiosidad y el rigor profesional.

Su interés nació en el Servicio de Cirugía de Tórax y Cardiovascular, donde descubrió un mundo distinto al trabajo en piso. Esa inquietud la llevó a especializarse en Brasil, en la Universidad Federal de São Paulo, experiencia que marcó definitivamente su camino.

En su trayectoria reconoce referentes que dejaron huella en su formación y vocación. La labor de Bertha exige precisión, rapidez y una profunda responsabilidad ética. Emergencias a cualquier hora, cirugías prolongadas y decisiones críticas forman parte de una rutina en la que, como ella misma señala, “de nosotros depende la vida del paciente”. Por ello, asegura que ninguna cirugía comienza si no están dadas todas las condiciones de seguridad.

“Hay que ser bastante cuidadoso y consciente en manejar el equipo de perfusión extracorpórea y poner mucho cuidado y amor en lo que uno hace porque cuando lo hace con cariño lo hace bien”, dijo.

Más allá del quirófano, Bertha Peña es madre de Rossy y Peter, y un pilar familiar para su sobrino Martín Jesús, a quien cuida como a un nieto. Viuda y hermana mayor de seis, sacó adelante a su familia mientras se especializaba en el extranjero, demostrando que la vocación profesional y la fortaleza personal pueden avanzar juntas, incluso en los momentos más difíciles.
