Una vez casados, el joven William dejará su puesto de maestro para viajar a Londres, la capital, donde incursionará en la escena artística y teatral, y de a poco se irá haciendo un nombre. Agnes, en cambio, hará el camino inverso: se irá recluyendo en su casa, atravesará las complejidades de la maternidad, asumirá el cuidado del hogar. Para asegurar el destino profesional de su esposo, se sacrificará en el rol doméstico.

Dirigida por Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”, “The Eternals”), “Hamnet” es una adaptación de la novela del mismo nombre de Maggie O’Farrell. Lleva el nombre de Hamnet en referencia a uno de los hijos de la pareja. El pequeño que –sabemos desde el inicio por un vaticinio fatídico– morirá y conducirá a la familia Shakespeare a una crisis prácticamente irreparable. El duelo que enfrentan no podrá ser curado, pero sí encontrará cierto consuelo en el ingenio creativo de William, pues le servirá de inspiración para escribir su clásico “Hamlet”, una de las grandes obras literarias de todos los tiempos.

Estamos ante una película de varias capas y temas –la estigmatización de una mujer como hechicera, el delirio artístico del escritor, la familia como reducto, los dilemas del amor y de la muerte, el poder de la ficción como “gran teatro del mundo”–, que sin embargo pierde fuerza en su aliento abarcador. Buena parte de “Hamnet” se siente como una sucesión de viñetas que no terminan de cuajar ni cohesionarse, y ello repercute en la profundidad y espesura de sus personajes

Ciertamente, Jessie Buckley es el gran centro de esta historia, y sobre sus hombros recae todo el peso dramático del relato. Pero en ciertos momentos luce hiperbólica, en exceso teatralizada (y no necesariamente me refiero a la secuencia de la puesta en escena, que es de hecho uno de los momentos más logrados del filme). Buckley es una actriz notable, y gracias a “Hamnet” está arrasando con cuanto premio se cruza en su camino, pero no creemos que este sea uno de los mejores papeles de su carrera (revisen “La hija oscura”, “Men” o “Ellas hablan” y lo entenderán).

La cinta de Zhao tiene méritos, por supuesto: su sentida aproximación al dolor, su propuesta estética y de época, silencios bien trabajados. Pero hechas las sumas y restas, y teniendo en cuenta la expectativa generada, nos resulta decepcionante.
