El fuego se declaró en la noche del lunes y la policía regional de Cataluña (Mossos d’Esquadra) estuvo recogiendo este martes indicios en el trastero incendiado para averiguar las causas del fuego, que creen se pudo originar por algún tipo de combustión -posiblemente un cigarro- que prendió en el mobiliario que se almacenaba en el recinto, situado en la azotea de un edificio de familias vulnerables y con algunos pisos ocupados.

Las tareas de identificación de los fallecidos no concluyeron aún, a la espera de los exámenes forenses que se están llevando a cabo, pero fuentes del entorno de las víctimas detallaron que se trata de cinco alumnos de instituto de origen magrebí y de 14 a 18 años.

El fuego causó heridas leves a otras cinco personas, cuatro de ellas policías locales y un joven que rechazó ser trasladado a un centro sanitario.

Los trastos y colchones que se amontonaban en el recinto incendiado, pequeño y sin ventilación alguna, aceleraron la combustión y provocaron una gran humareda en la que los adolescentes quedaron atrapados, sin poder encontrar la salida, posiblemente por encontrarse aturdidos por la inhalación tóxica en un recinto que, además, carecía de iluminación, señalaron fuentes cercanas a la investigación.

El Ayuntamiento de Manlleu mantiene que desconocía que el trastero era utilizado por jóvenes de la población como lugar de encuentro, aunque el edificio, entre otros de la población, iba a incluirse en un plan de rehabilitación de inmuebles de la localidad, según fuentes municipales.

Cada vivienda de ese edificio dispone de un trastero de ladrillo en la azotea, que siempre tenía el portal abierto, por lo que era habitual que accedieran a él jóvenes ajenos al inmueble, como se cree pasó con las víctimas.

Tras este trágico incendio, el Ayuntamiento decretó tres días de duelo oficial, puso a disposición de las familias de las víctimas equipos de apoyo psicológico, que también han actuado en los dos institutos en los que estudiaban los fallecidos y facilitó alojamiento en hoteles a algunos de los afectados.
