Una noticia un tanto sorpresiva porque no se esperaba un desenlace tan rápido, reconoce Benavides, que recuerda emocionado su última conversación, hace apenas 48 horas.

“Lo llamé porque sabía que estaba un poco mal. No podía hablar bien porque le faltaba aire, pero estaba perfectamente lúcido. Hablamos de sus próximos viajes, de la situación en Lima, una conversación como las de siempre”, explica.

Él solía viajar a Europa en septiembre u octubre, se quedaba un tiempo y se reunía con sus amigos. Porque era una persona muy vital. “Venía a Madrid y nos veíamos con sus montones de amigos”, recordaba Benavides, que habla con cariño de lo buen amigo que era Bryce Echenique.

“Se acordaba siempre de los amigos, de cualquier cosa que uno le dijera, estaba atento. Hace muchísimos años, cuando le conocí, vino a casa y cuando mi mujer y yo fuimos a Lima me recibió con la misma reciprocidad. Era un gran caballero y una gran persona”, comentó.

La última vez que le vio en persona fue en noviembre, en Lima, y lo encontró “bastante bien”, pero “ha sufrido una enfermedad larga y las cosas se precipitaron”, relata.

Benavides habla de él con cercanía, como amigo, pero también conoce bien la obra de Bryce Echenique, de quien destaca sus dos grandes títulos -“Un mundo para Julius”, su primera novela, aparecida en 1970, y “La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña” (1981)-, así como sus cuentos.

“Como escritor, se ha ido uno de los últimos grandes de la literatura latinoamericana, injustamente considerado como satélite del boom, por edad y por la publicación de sus novelas”, explica Benavides en referencia a los debates sobre si Bryce pertenecía o no al boom encabezado por Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar o Mario Vargas Llosa.

Su literatura era “muy fresca, muy luminosa, llena de humor y de ternura, algo no habitual en la literatura latinoamericana”, recuerda de su amigo.
