Hace unos días había cumplido 87 años. El escritor peruano Alfredo Bryce Echenique (1939) falleció este martes 10 de marzo, confirmó el Comercio con una fuente cercana al autor. Creador de novelas como “Un Mundo para Julius”, “La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña” y “Tantas veces Pedro”, fue un autor que, como pocos, desarrolló a lo largo de su carrera una radiografía de la clase acaudalada del Perú. Su nombre ya se había hecho conocido antes de dedicarse a las letras. En 1952 este diario consignó que el entonces adolescente Bryce había pasado por un fatal “callejón oscuro” en el colegio Santa María Marianistas; como resultado del castigo terminó desmayado. La noticia fue reportada por El Comercio. Su padre, Francisco Bryce Arróspide, lo sacó del colegio y lo mandó al internado San Pablo.

Luego de estudiar derecho para satisfacer a su padre se fue a Europa, donde consolidó su carrera de escritor por décadas. Su primera obra, el libro de cuentos “Huerto cerrado” (1968), se publicó originalmente en Cuba. Encontrar esta edición fuera del país insular fue una tarea casi imposible.

Con su primera novela, “Un mundo para Julius” (1970), Bryce Echenique realizó una radiografía a las personas que mejor conoció; aquellos que solo tenían dinero. En su libro de memorias “Permiso para vivir” (1993) el escritor cuenta que en 1972 los escritores Mario Vargas Llosa y Julio Ramón Ribeyro presentaron la novela de su amigo a los premios de fomento a la cultura Ricardo Palma, que ganó. Bryce Echenique cree que el libro sentó como anillo al dedo al gobierno militar, que había emprendido una campaña contra la oligarquía.

En el transcurso de los años Bryce Echenique mantuvo un ritmo constante de publicaciones. Siguieron las novelas “Tantas veces Pedro” (1977), “La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña” (1981), “El hombre que hablaba de Octavia de Cádiz” (1985), “No me esperen en abril” (1995), entre otras. Ganó el Premio Planeta con la novela “El huerto de mi amada” (2002).

En el 2012 publicó su última novela, “Dándole pena a la tristeza”. Ese mismo año recibió el Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara.
