Sin embargo, un bus interprovincial que se desplazaba por la misma vía y venía por detrás no logró detenerse a tiempo e impactó violentamente contra el vehículo menor. Producto de la colisión, la miniván fue proyectada hacia el peatón, dio dos vueltas de campana y terminó completamente destruida a un lado de la carretera.
A raíz del choque, los ocupantes del vehículo colectivo (entre ellos varios niños) resultaron con lesiones de diversa gravedad. El impacto también provocó congestión vehicular en la zona. El tránsito en el tramo afectado de la Panamericana Sur fue restringido a un solo carril en un tramo aproximado de 200 metros en sentido de sur a norte.
Vecinos del sector señalaron que el accidente ocurrió a unos 70 metros de un puente peatonal que se encuentra operativo. De acuerdo con los testimonios recogidos por la Policía, el reciclador habría optado por cruzar directamente la carretera en lugar de dirigirse hacia la estructura de seguridad.
Las autoridades indicaron que este tipo de maniobras representa un riesgo constante en la zona, pues algunos residentes y trabajadores suelen cruzar la vía pese al intenso tránsito de vehículos.
